Technological use disorders: European cross-cultural longitudinal and experimental studies for Internet and smartphone problem uses

Description
This research project consists in study the technological use disorders (based on Internet and smartphone) in European problem users, to estimate prevalence, psychosocial profiles, as well as to ascertain psychological factors involved in the development and maintenance of these disorders. This Marie Curie 2013 proposal covers one overall research with two underlying studies: First study, an online survey for cross-cultural longitudinal study with 10 European countries (in three waves) to estimate the evolution of prevalence and profiles of European citizens who present a problematic Internet and smartphone uses (creating and adapting scales, clinically validated, to both technological problem uses) Second study, users extracted from first wave in Belgium will be invited to laboratory testing to determine psychological factors in these problematic technological uses and participate in focus groups to know their own perception of these maladaptive technological usage patterns The objectives for this project are: 1) to select and adapt scales (in the European languages of countries selected) measuring problem Internet and smartphone uses to conduct a cross-cultural study 2) to estimate the prevalence of problem users within three waves to perform a cross-cultural longitudinal comparison per technology, per users’ categories and per country 3) to look into the perception of excessive and problem technological European users selected by a theoretical qualitative sample strategy through online narratives about their sensations, needs, cognitions and behaviours in relation with the maladaptive use of these technologies 4) to selected Belgium problem and non-problem users of both cyber-disorders to test in the laboratory psychological factors that lead with the self-regulation difficulties of users who presents these addictive symptomatology With a mixed methods approach will be provide results in Europe technological use disorders reinforced for experimental findings.

Fostering cross-cultural communication: Identifying the linguistic factors that promote comprehensibility in academic and workplace settings

Description
'Oral communication is a two-way process, involving a message sender and receiver. In telecommunications, a good technician can often efficiently repair a faulty signal. However, when it comes to human information exchange, and particularly when interlocutors are from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds, troubleshooting the unsuccessful transmission of a message is a more abstract and complex process. This is because myriad linguistic and non-linguistic factors interact to facilitate or hinder successful communication. My research, which seeks to elucidate different facets of this complex problem, is grounded in the goal of identifying the aspects of second language (L2) speech that are most important for achieving effective cross-cultural communication. A mixed-methods approach will be used to accomplish four major research goals: (1) 'disentangle' the aspects of L2 speech that, while noticeable or distracting, have little bearing on listener understanding, as opposed to those that genuinely impede communication, (2) validate an L2 comprehensibility scale, originally developed in the Canadian context, for use on UK campuses, (3) examine the potential biasing effects of listeners’ social variables on their ratings of L2 pronunciation, and finally (4) investigate the effects of haphazard peer-pairing practices on test-takers’ performance on collaborative tasks, particularly with respect to phonological accommodations. Taken together, this research will address the pressing social-educational challenges of reducing language barriers and improving the oral communication skills of newcomers, in order to facilitate their social integration. With the support of the Marie Curie CIG, I will establish a state-of-the-art L2 speech laboratory. This facility, which is crucial for conducting high-caliber L2 pronunciation research, will put the University of Bristol on the map as a center of emerging research strength in this area both within Europe and internationally.'
