Eleanor is a second year PhD student in the Department of Geography. Her research is titled: "more than victims: articulating new representations of Afghan women after the fall of Kabul" (supervised by Prof Elena Fiddian-Qasmiyeh and Prof Rachel Rosen). The project aims to challenge and update post-9/11 western representations of Afghan women, through participatory research with Afghan women living in the UK. Eleanor is funded through a UCL Research Excellence Scholarship (2025-2028). Eleanor is currently recruiting a group of 5-8 Afghan women who arrived in the UK after the fall of Kabul in 2021, to participate in three connected methods: focus groups (to discuss existing representations of and surrounding Afghan women), creative workshops (where new representations of and for Afghan women will be co-created), and individual semi-structured interviews (where the existing and new representations will be brought into conversation). She is approaching representation through a postcolonial feminist framework, building on the works of Lila Abu-Lughod ('veiled and submissive' women 'in need of saving', 2002/2013), Chandra Talpade Mohanty ('third world woman', 1984), and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak ('subaltern' who is 'spoken for', 1988), whilst also fostering an ethics of care (following, e.g., Raghuram, 2019) and refusal (following, e.g., Simpson, 2014). This PhD project builds upon Eleanor's previous work, namely her multi-award-winning undergraduate geography dissertation: “"I feel homeless”: An investigation into the experiences of Afghanistani women in the UK after the fall of Kabul." This piece of primary research included interviews with Afghan women living in a so-called 'bridging hotel' in Oxfordshire, and with the lawyers, activists, journalists and academics who had secured and facilitated evacuations in the wake of the Taliban's return to power. The dissertation gained a mark of 84 and encouraged Eleanor to consider a career in academia.
