Nikola
Lero

Nikola Lero was born in Sarajevo and grew up as a refugee from the Bosnian War. He is a final-year PhD candidate at the University of Sheffield's School of Architecture and Landscape, funded by UKRI, where he also teaches. His doctoral research follows three waves of Yugoslav-Serb migration to London. He traces how people build home inside the house, the neighbourhood, and across borders, and how everyday bordering shapes their sense of ontological security. He carries out this fieldwork (life history interviews and home visits with 18 participants) in Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian as well as English. In 2025, he published his first solo-authored paper in a Q1 journal, Territory, Politics, Governance, introducing a framework he calls "the migrant struggle for ontological security." He is an external affiliate of the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory in Belgrade. Over his career he has won several competitive fellowships, including a Fulbright fellowship at Saint Louis University (2022 to 2023), the Alfred Landecker Democracy Fellowship, and the Pat Cox Fellowship, which placed him in the European Parliament. He holds an Erasmus Mundus MA in Migration and Intercultural Relations (EMMIR, summa cum laude) and an LL.B. He is also a published poet. His debut collection, 47 Poems about Love, Pain, and Bosnia, sits alongside his work as co-founder of Literary Union, a post-Yugoslav literary collective.
