Catarina Sampaio is a PhD candidate and doctoral research fellow in Intercultural Relations at Universidade Aberta (the Portuguese Open University) and a researcher at the Centre for the Study of Migrations and Intercultural Relations (CEMRI). Her doctoral research project, “Adaptation, Resilience, and Social Integration: An Intersectional Study of Refugee Women in Portugal (Porto) and France (Paris),” is funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). As part of her fieldwork, she spent seven months in Paris conducting interviews with refugee women, carrying out participant observation, and reviewing French academic literature related to her research topic. From March to September 2025, she undertook a doctoral research stay at the LIAgE research laboratory (Laboratoire Interculturalités, Apprentissages, Marges, Expériences) at Université Paris 8. During this period, she also attended seminars, lectures, and conferences at Université Paris 8 and the Collège de France. She holds a Master’s degree in Intercultural Relations from Universidade Aberta, where she completed a dissertation entitled “Women and Forced Migration: Adaptation, Resilience, and Social Integration in Portugal,” later distinguished and published as a book by the Migration Observatory of the High Commission for Migration (OM/ACM, I.P.). She also holds a postgraduate diploma in Human Rights from Ius Gentium Conimbrigae / Centre for Human Rights (University of Coimbra) and a Bachelor’s degree in Languages and International Relations from the University of Porto. Her research focuses on forced migration, gender, intersectionality, resilience, and the social integration of refugee women. She has presented her work at national and international conferences and has published in academic outlets in the field of migration studies. At Universidade Aberta, she also serves as an e-learning tutor in the Bachelor’s programme in Social Sciences since 2024.
